- About Renum…
-
- Renum is a Second Sight/Red Ryder Host utility to renumber messages
- consecutively, normally starting at 1 (though you can start at some other
- number). It is useful if your messages have crawled over the five-digit
- mark and users are bellyaching about having to type such long numbers.
- And, of course, it’s a lifesaver when message numbers get close to
- #4294967296, which is about the limit for Second Sight. In addition to
- renumbering messages, it also correctly adjusts "reply to" numbers and
- high messages read for each user in the UserLog. Renum is compatible with
- Tabby events, can run as a Second Sight Command 50 application or can run
- stand-alone.
-
- Renum will handle up to 10,000 messages.
-
- Install Renum at the same level as your Config file, then run it while
- holding down the mouse button to configure it. It needs two pieces of
- configuration information: the default application to launch in case it is
- run without a Tabby-style launch.next file and the starting number for
- renumbered messages. Normally, the default application is the name of your
- BBS application. The Find button next to this text field lets you select
- the application to enter its name without any strenuous typing. Talk about
- automation! The starting number is typically 1, but if you’re someone like
- Michael Bean, you might want to start messages at 80000. You can enter any
- number from 1 to 1000000 (that’s 1 million). If you enter zero or a
- negative number, it’s converted to 1 when the settings are saved. Numbers
- larger than 1 million are clipped to 1 million.
-
- That’s about all there is to say. Run Renum as often as you like. If you
- run it in a Tabby even chain, put it right after mehitabel to get an
- unbroken sequence of message numbers.
-
- Performance: Renum sequenced 3,067 irregularly-spaced messages and updated
- a UserLog of 687 entries in 20 seconds on my Mac II.
-
- With the introduction of Renum, I am also releasing new versions of
- TExport and ff, both of which used to depend on message numbers to find
- their place. The new versions don’t care about message numbers and are
- consequently more robust and good-humored.
-
- Renum is a free bonus for registered users of Archie & mehit and is not to
- be otherwise distributed.
-
- If you like Renum, send mail to PETERJ on GEnie or via FidoNet to Pete
- Johnson at 102/823.2, or drop me a postcard. If I get good mail, I will
- continue to distribute freebies such as these. Otherwise I might stop.
